Dear Minister/Honorable Member:
I am deeply concerned that your government is committed to expanding
the shellfish industry without due scientific assessments of the likely
impacts on local ecology, other economic interests besides shellfish operations,
or nearby communities. I am gravely concerned with the extensive pollution,
introduction of exotic species, and removal of public shellfish harvesting
and boating sites already incurred as the result of the government's promotion
of shellfish expansion.
The lack of any enforceable code of practice, the lack of government monitoring
of toxin levels, and the infringements on other citizens' uses of coastal
waters is unacceptable. Shellfish tenures should not be located adjacent
to residential eco-tourism, or pre-existing local area businesses that
rely on coastal resources.
I request that you halt any further expansion or sale of shellfish tenures
until:
- Adequate scientific studies have been conducted on the impacts of
large-scale shellfish operations;
- Adequate siting criteria are established together with an enforceable
(and enforced) Code of Practice; and
- A full monitoring program is established for cadmium and other toxins
to ensure the sale of healthy seafood for consumption by B.C. and other
citizens.
Respectfully,
your name here
